As the 2024 fiscal year kicks off, Elgin’s City Council will be taking a more proactive approach to filling the town’s vacant positions with an upcoming market analysis.

The Elgin Independent School District board of trustees recently voted to approve a contract with Texas Public Safety and Investigations to provide an armed security officer at each campus in the district.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Francis Frankeny, Oct. 25, 2023, at the age of 81. He departed this world surrounded by his loving family.

Froilan Gaspar Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, dear brother and a true friend, passed away Oct. 24, 2023, at the age of 47. He was born March 24, 1976, in Austin, and his departure has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ellen Frances Schroeder, 76, of Elgin, passed away Oct. 10, 2023, in Bastrop County, a few weeks short of her 77th birthday. Ellen was born Oct. 29, 1946, to C.J. and Margaret Schroeder in Rock Valley, Iowa. After graduating from Rock Valley High School, Ellen earned a BA degree in English from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois, in 1968. She also earned a master’s in education in 1970 from Loyola as well.

Maria Glenda Bernard, affectionately known as Glenda, gracefully transitioned from this world Friday, Oct. 27, 2023.

Tonya Lynnette Murphy, 56, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023.

On Oct. 22, 2023, the world lost a remarkable and uncompromising soul. Lenore Pietrzak passed away peacefully surrounded by love and her family.

Virgil Lee Smith, 85, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully July 29, 2023, at the Henderson Hospital, in Henderson, Nevada. He was born June 26, 1938, in Elgin, and grew up on a farm in the Pleasant Grove Community, where he attended the Pleasant Grove tworoom school.
