The Maribeau B. Lamar honorees for the 2022-23 academic year received recognition May 16 at the McDade School Awards night.
According to sponsors, the Lamar award represents the best that Texas education has to offer and goes to students and educators in recognition of outstanding personal achievement in academics, citizenship, community service and athletics.
Presented by Elgin Lodge No. 328 and the McDade Independent School District, this year’s student honorees are Peyton Spriggs and Mariana Palacios, while educators Tonya Christiansen, Kathy Hobbs and Reagan Wilhelm were named for elementary, middle and high schools, respectively.
Lamar was a freemason who served as the second president for the Republic of Texas.
Remembered by most as “The Father of Texas Education,” Lamar saw that the Texas Congress passed acts in 1839 and 1840 that granted more than 17,000 acres of land to establish public schools in each county.
