The Elgin High School varsity volleyball team continued its 2023 season this past week as the Lady Wildcats competed in District 23-5A play on Sept. 19 on the road at Cedar Creek High School and back home on Sept. 22 vs. Bastrop High School.

On the road against the Lady Eagles, the Lady Wildcats were defeated in three straight sets. Although they lost the first two sets 8-25 and 11-25, Elgin was very competitive in the final set against Cedar Creek as they fought until the end and lost 21-25. Lady Wildcats sophomore Trinity Martinez was again all over the court with a teamhigh 23 serves received and 10 digs, junior Jordin Seeger had 16 serves received and seven digs, while freshman Meta Elliott had seven digs of her own. Elliott and junior Sabra Baker had three kills apiece for the Lady Wildcats, while senior Avinity Pleasant and junior Layla Whitman each had two kills on the night for Elgin in the loss.

On Friday night hosting a solid Bastrop team, Elgin held its own on the Lady Wildcats’ floor. Although they lost in three straight sets, the Lady Wildcats kept up and fell 19-25, 22-25 and 14-25 to the Lady Bears. Pleasant had a team-high five kills and 12 digs for Elgin, sophomore Bella Navejas added four kills of her own, Seeger also had double-digit digs with 10 and junior Nadia Sagustume had six assists.

Elgin (0-5 in district play) has a golden opportunity to get that first district win of the season Tuesday night away against Pflugerville High School (also 0-5 in district) and will return home at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 to host a very good Pflugerville Hendrickson High School squad.
