BASTROP — The Elgin High School girls varsity soccer team picked up its second 5A-District 23 victory of the season last Friday as the Lady Wildcats defeated Cedar Creek High School 3-1 on the road.
Following a lopsided loss Jan. 30 to Georgetown High School, the Lady Wildcats faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime Feb. 2 to the Cedar Creek Lady Eagles. With a very strong second half, Elgin scored three unanswered goals en route to a hardfought district win.
“We couldn't put the ball away in the first half but came back in the second half, starting fresh and stronger,” Lady Wildcats Head Coach Gabriela Johnson said.
The Lady Wildcats had a high-powered second half as they scored on a penalty kick by junior Dory Estrada, a free kick by senior Katelyn Muñoz and Estrada assisted on a goal scored by freshman Ximena Azamar.
“This was Ximena's first district game in her high school career,” Johnson said. “Despite only playing with us for one preseason game and practice, she showed us her potential and had great chemistry with the rest of the team.”
Elgin (4-5-1 overall, 2-2 district record) is scheduled Feb. 6 to host Bastrop High School and will hit the road Feb. 9 to take on Pflugerville High School.
