PFLUGERVILLE — The Elgin High School girls varsity soccer team continued its push to the 2024 playoffs this past week with a dominant 4-0 win on the road in its 5A-District 23 match at Pflugerville Connally High School.
“Our back line, which included Maria Yanez, Courtney Shepard, Briana Yanez and Sheyla Aguirre, did a fantastic job,” Elgin Head Coach Gabriela Johnson said. “And, of course, our awesome goalie, Juliet Almazan. The girls were able to clean up anything back there and keep a clean sheet for the game.”
Scorers for the Lady Wildcats in the victory over Connally were senior Katelyn Muñoz, junior Kailyn Cook, junior Dory Estrada and sophomore Abby Muñoz. Estrada assisted on two of the goals, while Katelyn Muñoz and freshman Ximena Azamar had one assist apiece.
Following a tough 5-0 loss Friday night at home to a high-powered Georgetown High School team, the Lady Wildcats (6-9-1 overall, 4-6 in district) were scheduled Feb. 27 to host Cedar Creek High School and will travel March 1 at 7:15 p.m. to take on Bastrop High School.
Elgin also has a match with potentially high stakes on playoff seeding March 5 at home versus Pflugerville High School.
“We intend to go out and play very defensive games when we go up against Cedar Creek, Bastrop and Pflugerville,” Johnson said. “If we can beat all three teams, we should be in good standing and be able to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, if we fall short of any of those teams, it will be very tough on us.”
