SMITHVILLE — Smithville Independent School District announced this past week the hiring of Layne Neumann as the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for the 2024-25 school year.
“I am honored and excited to join Smithville Independent School District as the new Athletic Director,” Coach Neumann said. “I believe one of the greatest things about being a coach is that it is a family-oriented business. Coaching and relationships are very important to me, and this is why I became a Texas high school coach and educator. It is my goal to build this program into one that the student-athletes and community can be proud of.”
Smithville ISD Superintendent Cheryl Burns spoke very highly of Neumann and the impact he is expected to have on the Tigers’ and Lady Tigers’ athletic programs.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Layne Neumann t o th e Smithville ISD family,” Burns said. “His proven leadership, combined with his passion for student success, make him the ideal candidate to lead our athletic department into the future. We look forward to the positive impact he will undoubtedly have on our students and community.”
As Athletic Director, Coach Neumann will oversee all aspects of the district's athletic programs, including scheduling, budgeting, facility management and will serve as the varsity football head coach for Smithville High School.
Neumann has served in various coaching and administrative capacities over the past 15 years at schools in the Houston area, including most recently in 6A as the co-offensive coordinator at Fort Bend Ridge Point High School. He played high school football at Hondo High School and went on to play collegiately at Texas A&M University.
