The Elgin High School varsity softball team continued its surge in 5A-District 23 play this past week as the Lady Wildcats dominated Bastrop High School and Pflugerville High School.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 13, BASTROP LADY BEARS 1

The Lady Wildcats used a 10-run fourth inning March 19 to put an exclamation mark on a lopsided 13-1 victory at home over the Lady Bears.

Elgin sophomore Bianca Galindo had a strong night at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with a team-high six runs batted in, one home run and one triple.

Lady Wildcats senior Jessica Cantrell did her job in the circle against Bastrop as she pitched five innings with seven strikeouts, only one run allowed and zero walks issued. Cantrell also excelled at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with one triple, one double and one RBI.

Also driving in one run apiece for Elgin were senior Emily Sumner, senior Mackenzie Farris, senior Danielle King, senior Gabriella King and freshman Jaelyn Barker.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 19, PFLUGERVILLE LADY PANTHERS 6

For the third straight game, the Lady Wildcats scored double-digit runs against a district foe and topped a season high in runs March 22 with a 19-6 victory at Pflugerville.

Elgin got out to an 8-0 lead by the fourth inning but Pflugerville rallied over the next two frames to cut the deficit to 8-6. After the Lady Wildcats added two insurance runs in the sixth inning, they pulled away against the Lady Panthers in the seventh frame with nine runs to put this game completely out of reach.

As a team, the Lady Wildcats had 14 hits and took advantage of 11 errors committed on defense by the Lady Panthers. Elgin had four players who drove in three runs apiece: Galindo, Barker, senior Jaylan Roberson and sophomore Trinity Martinez. The Lady Wildcats got two runs driven in by Cantrell and one each from Danielle King and Sumner, while Farris had three hits and scored three runs.

Cantrell was dominant in the circle for Elgin as she pitched seven innings with 17 strikeouts, three hits allowed and just two walks issued. All six runs she allowed were unearned.

Elgin (11-7 overall, 4-2 district record), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, was scheduled March 26 to host Pflugerville Hendrickson High School and will remain home Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. versus Georgetown East View High School.
