Refuge for victims of intimate abuse receives donation

BASTROP – As the month comes to a close, the Family Crisis Center would like to remind Bastrop County residents that April also stands as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month, and that its doors remain open.

Since its conception in 1981, the localized refuge has provided services for individuals facing intimate partner violence, sexual violence and stalking – and thanks to a special charitable donation by Stephanie Jenkins, the center can now expand its campus and improve its services.

“I want to thank the leadership of the Family Crisis Center for their years of hard work helping women and children in Bastrop County and counties nearby. I am proud to be associated with your organization,” said Jenkins to staff members.

Jenkins, wife of the late Robert Jenkins, donated one acre of land to the Family Crisis Center April 15, as trustee of the Jenkins Family Trust, Jenkins Family Investments and the McLeod Family Limited Partnership.

“Thanks go to Judy Mc-Leod Bland and Bobby Jenkins for their support in making this donation,” added Jenkins. “No single person ever did as much as [Robert] did, helping needy women and children. He believed to whom much is given, much is expected. He would appreciate the work you have done. Keep up the good work.”

The Family Crisis Center’s office is located at 431 Old Austin Hwy. and has been leasing the land from the Jenkins Family since 1993. The building was originally built for use as the Bits & Pieces Thrift Store, until a larger space to expand crisis services was required and was remodeled into the Center’s permanent office, according to representatives.

The asylum began from a coalition of rural Texas women with a shared vision of offering hope, support and assistance to women victimized by domestic violence. The Center has evolved into a community leader in Bastrop, Colorado, Fayette and Lee County, providing services to victims experiencing domestic and sexual violence and stalking in their lives.

No appointments are required for immediate crisis intervention and a 24/7 hotline can be reached at (512) 303-7755.

The center will also assist with protective orders and assault charges, providing courtroom accompaniment and support for hearings. Counseling, therapy and accountability programs are available as victims move from shelters to transitional housing, as well.
