Wildcats overwhelmed by Trojans in tough loss

The Elgin Wildcats varsity football team suffered its second loss of the season Friday, Sept. 6, falling 62-20 to the Anderson Trojans.

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Owens led Elgin’s offense, throwing for 140 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Owens also topped the team’s rushing with 25 yards.

The Wildcats’ defense struggled to contain Anderson’s potent offense, which racked up 294 yards through the air and 340 yards on the ground. The Trojans’ rushing game was particularly dominant, with sophomore running back Jay Fullmer and senior running back Dominic Mays combining for 244 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Anderson senior wide receiver Ed Small was a significant threat, amassing 141 yards and two receiving touchdowns. The Wildcats’ secondar y struggled with explosive plays, allowing multiple big gains through the air.

Offensively, Elgin had difficulty establishing a ground game, managing only 55 rushing yards and 140 passing yards. The Wildcats played from behind all night, trailing by 20 points early due to two Trojan passing touchdowns. Elgin briefly narrowed the gap to 20-7 in the second quarter but was soon overwhelmed by 35 unanswered points, ending the third quarter 55-7.

Despite the setback, the Wildcats showed resilience, scoring two late touchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Gary Jefferson Jr. led Elgin in receiving with six catches for 48 yards.

The Wildcats now stand at 0-2 for the season, while the Trojans improve to 2-0.

Elgin will look to rebound as they travel to Montgomery Sept. 13, for a 7:00 p.m. game at Montgomery Independent School District Stadium.
