BASTROP — Bastrop City Council has officially designated the Elgin Courier as its newspaper of record, following a decision at its Oct. 22 meeting.
Previously, the Bastrop Advertiser held the title, but the council opted for a change to ensure the city’s notices reach a wider audience, as the Advertiser is not classified as a general circulation newspaper.
“We don’t have to necessarily have an official newspaper, but it’s good for us to have so our citizens know where to go to look for any ads or anything we put in,” said City Secretary Irma Parker. “I checked with the Elgin Courier and the county uses them as the official newspaper and so does Smithville, and of course Elgin.”
Parker added that the Courier has already delivered cost savings for the city on lengthy notifications, and that it has an online option for residents to easily access Bastrop news and city notices.
“The courier is proud to serve all Bastrop County residents and looks forward to working more closely with the city of Bastrop,” said Elgin Courier Managing Editor Niko Demetriou.
