Despite a strong season opening, the Elgin varsity boys basketball team hasn’t yet claimed its first district win.
The Wildcats suffered two losses last week, falling 55-28 to the Georgetown Eagles and 48-35 to the Pflugerville Connally Cougars — dropping to 11-9 overall and 0-3 in district play. Elgin got off to a promising start against Georgetown with a three-pointer from senior point guard Robert Hooker and a layup from senior forward Gregory Aguirre. The early 5-3 lead didn’t last, as the Eagles dominated the rest of the way.
The Wildcats managed just three points in the second quarter and trailed 31-11 at halftime. The team’s struggles continued in the second half, unable to generate a consistent offensive threat. Aguirre led Elgin with seven points, followed by junior point guard Tyson McFarlin with six.
Elgin managed to bring more points to the board against the Cougars.
After falling behind by seven in the opening quarter, senior shooting guard Amar Bermudez provided a spark with a fast break layup and added two steals and a block. After his efforts, the Wildcats trailed 18-6 at halftime as their offense struggled to find rhythm.
In the third quarter, Elgin cut into the deficit behind back-to-back three-pointers from Bermudez and a layup from McFarlin, bringing the score to 2519. However, the Wildcats endured another scoring drought as the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead. Late in the match, Mc-Farlin hit a three-pointer to pull Elgin within eight, but Pflugerville Connally responded with five straight points to seal the win.
Rebounding proved an issue for Elgin, as they were outpaced off the board 38-18, allowing the Cougars to capitalize on second-chance opportunities.
The Wildcats will travel to face East View before returning home to host Hendrickson Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
