A tough ending at the Class 5A Division II state championships didn’t diminish a season of growth for Elgin’s girls’ powerlifting duo.
Sophomore Yasmin Hernandez and freshman Yailen Huitron both qualified for the event but bombed out, missing all three of their attempts in squat, bench press and deadlift.
Despite the early exit, Hernandez and Huitron reached new highs for the Lady Wildcats program this year, setting personal records and pushing the team forward, according to coaches.
Attention now turns to Elgin’s boys, who will compete March 21-22 in Abilene. Seniors Miguel Nunez and Joseph Stiggers, in the 181-pound and 308-pound weight class, respectively, look to cap their seasons with strong performances on the state stage.
