Hidden resource inspires snapshot competition

Although it remains out of sight, groundwater is a critical resource that sustains homes, businesses and farms in Bastrop County, according to the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District.

District officials say nearly all of the county’s water supply comes from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, which takes significantly longer to recharge than rivers and lakes.

In recognition of National Groundwater Awareness Week, LPGCD is urging residents to conserve and protect the area’s aquifer, noting that the average local resident uses about 125 gallons of water per day — 56% percent higher than the national average.

As part of the initiative, the district has launched the “Thank You, Well” Photovoice Contest, encouraging residents to share images and stories illustrating the importance of wells in everyday life, whether sustaining livestock, watering gardens or supporting households.

Participants must submit a high-resolution photo, JPEG or PNG, along with a narrative of up to 200 words explaining its significance. Entries will be judged anonymously based on photo composition, originality, visual impact, narrative quality and relevance to the theme.

Winning entries will be announced in August and featured in the 2026 LPGCD Calendar. Prizes include $200 for first place, $100 for second place, $75 for third place, $50 for honorable mention and $25 for eight additional entries.

Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] by June 30.
