Smithville squads earn district wins over Rattlers

Baseball

Smithville’s varsity baseball team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Navasota Friday, April 4, holding off a late push by the Rattlers to secure the district win.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Layne Kimball, extending their lead to 3-0 in the third, thanks to an RBI double from Grayson Mullen and a sacrifice fly.

After a quiet stretch at the plate, Smithville added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Aiden Peacock drove in a run with a double, making it 4-1.

Navasota scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Mullen and the Tigers closed it out, sealing the win on a flyout.

Mullen picked up the win on the mound, pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight.

The Tigers improved to 12-9 overall and 2-3 in district play.

They closed out the series against Navasota after press time Tuesday, April 8, and will travel to Bellville Friday, April 11, for a 7 p.m. first pitch.

Softball

The Lady Tigers dominated in a run-rule win over Navasota, taking an 11-0 victory in six innings behind a strong offensive performance from Emery Bayer, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Smithville came out hot with a five-run first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Bayer and an RBI double by Dakota Young.

The Lady Tigers added three more in the third, including RBI singles from Brittney Collins and Kenna Tiner.

They capped off the win with a three-run sixth inning, scoring on an error, a single from Tiner and a sacrifice fly.

Jessica Hinnant was stellar in the circle, throwing six scoreless innings and recording seven strikeouts.

Smithville improved to 19-5-1 overall and 6-1 in district play.

The Lady Tigers wrapped up the series against Navasota April 8 and are scheduled to visit Bellville Friday, April 11, at 6 p.m.
