BASTROP — The Bastrop Bears split their district series against the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, falling 3-1 in the opener Tuesday, April 1, before bouncing back with a 2-1 win Friday, April 4.

Game 1

Despite outhitting the Raptors 3-1, the Bears came up short in a pitchers’ duel.

Bastrop drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first but couldn’t capitalize. LASA responded in the bottom half with an RBI triple and a groundout that plated a second run for a quick 2-0 lead.

Bastrop trimmed the deficit in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1, but both teams went scoreless over the next three innings. The Raptors added an insurance run in the fifth on a wild pitch.

Mason Smith singled in the top of the seventh to give the Bears a chance, but a groundout ended the game, handing Bastrop its first district loss of the season.

Despite the result, Cooper Voigt turned in a strong outing on the mound, pitching six innings, allowing three runs and recording a season- high 11 strikeouts.

Game 2

Pitching remained the story in the series finale, as the teams combined for just four hits.

Bastrop retired LASA in order to start the game, then took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Tristan St. Clair drew a walk and came around to score.

The Raptors tied it in the top of the second with an RBI single, and Bastrop went down in order in the bottom half.

The game stayed level until the bottom of the sixth, when Val Regalado delivered an RBI single to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Regalado then sealed the win himself, striking out the side in the seventh. He threw a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out seven.

With the split, Bastrop improved to 8-10 overall and 5-1 in district play.

The Bears faced Crockett after press time Tuesday and will travel to take on the Cougars Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.
