A 24-2 scoring run essentially dictated the outcome of Friday night’s matchup between the Elgin Wildcats and the visiting Georgetown Eagles.

After keeping things close for most of the first half, the Wildcats ultimately fell too far behind and lost 71-49. The Wildcats are now 5-15 and are still in search of their first district win.

Elgin got off to a strong start as Nathen Lewis and Amar Bermudez sank early 3-pointers to give the home team a 10-8 lead. However, the Eagles responded with a flurry of 3-pointers of their own and took an 11-point lead. Lewis drilled another triple before the first quarter closed, bringing the score to 23-15.

The Wildcats played tenacious defense over the next five minutes as they allowed just one basket. A 3-point shot by Marcus Hickman and a pair of free throws by Lewis narrowed the deficit to two. Georgetown finished the half strong, though, and took a 38-25 lead into halftime.

Despite the unideal end to the second quarter, the Wildcats still had a chance down 13. Unfortunately for the home team, they went cold offensively while the Eagles continued to make it rain from all over the court. Suddenly, the score was 49-25 with just over three minutes in the third quarter.

Bralon Rodriguez gave the Wildcats a glimmer of hope after knocking down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 18 and then drawing a charge on the defensive end. But it wouldn’t be enough. The Eagles remained in control throughout the fourth quarter to lock up the 22-point victory.

Elgin will host Cedar Creek on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and they will travel to face Bastrop on Friday, Dec. 13. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
