Priscilla Totten Jarvis

Priscilla Totten Jarvis

Priscilla Totten Jarvis, aka Daredevil Dusty Totten, passed away July 24, 2024, in Bastrop, Texas, at the age of 82.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dec. 11, 1941, to Robert B. Totten and Martha Kittredge Totten, Priscilla and her older brother John grew up in Amarillo, Texas, where she called hersel f Daredevil Dusty Totten. She graduated from Texas Tech with a BBA and later received an MBA from Southern Methodist University.

From her geologist father, she inherited a lifelong interest in rocks, and from her mother, a lifelong love of birds, especially pink f lamingos. With a little help from friends, she and her husband Jeremiah built a home in the Bastrop County countryside. There she enjoyed organic gardening, feeding birds, her beloved dogs and playing the flute. Traveling, reading, classical music and games were the passions she joyfully shared with friends.

Priscilla lived an adventurous life in San Francisco during the early 1970s where she had a leather crafting business, and later in Dallas, Austin and Bastrop County. In 1967 she began a career in information technology for various state agencies, including the

Texas Pharmacy Board, Department of Agriculture, the Legislative Budget Board and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. During those years she was a programmer, systems analyst, project manager, strategic planner and director of data processing, retiring in 1999. She served on the boards of the Pines and Prairies Land Trust and the Bastrop County Audubon Society. She was a proud Democrat.

What the world has lost is a woman who was fun to be around. She crafted her speaking style at Toastmasters and could tell an engaging story. Her sense of humor was playful, and she often had a trick up her sleeve. On her 40th birthday she dressed up as an old gray-haired woman with a cane and fooled her colleagues. She liked to howl at the full moon and encouraged others (including coyotes) to howl with her. She had an ongoing dispute with local squirrels over her bird feeders and would trap squirrels and relocate them. Snakes were captured and released near Wilbarger Creek. Priscilla was a woman of courage with a big heart, and little tolerance for greedy squirrels.

Priscilla is survived by her brother and sisterin- law, two nieces, her ex-husband Jeremiah Jarvis and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved uncle Gilbert Totten.
