Elgin Swedes plan annual celebration

Swedish Midsummer festival to coincide with Elgin’s Western Days

The Elgin Swedish Association is set to have their 77th annual Midsummer reunion June 22 at the SPJST Hall in Elgin, with traditional music acts, vendors and dances celebrating the heritage of Sweden.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour, the event will host Swedish stores and a bakery where attendees can purchase traditional desserts to go along with their steak dinner, as well as hand crafted holiday items. Lori Brooke, a Swedish singer, accordionist and yodeler, will be the featured musical showcase. A Maypole will also be erected to host traditional folk dancing.

Midsummer is the last remaining heritage festival hosted in Elgin, with other German and Czech counterparts falling by the wayside. The event historically celebrates the longest day of the year to welcome summertime and the season of fertility. The Swedish community is proud to continue the tradition and celebrate their heritage, said association members.

The reunion coincides with Elgin’s Western Days, adding to the town’s annual homecoming celebration. The multiple-day affair hosts various sport tournaments, live music, local artisan craft vendors, a carnival and a parade. Culminating with an outdoor marketplace and show, both Midsummer and Western Days offer all-ages family entertainment.

Those interested in pre-purchasing Midsummer tickets are asked to contact association members Gayle Anderson at 512-670-6945, Karin Barker at 512-281-3529 or Dolores Lundgren at 512-281-3900.
