Courier collects awards

ROUND ROCK – The Elgin Courier was one of several newspapers that attended the Texas Press Association convention at Kalahari Resorts in Round Rock this past weekend.

This year, 99 newspapers submitted 920 entries into the Texas Better Newspaper Contest. The competition featured 18 categories that were split into divisions based on circulation. Entries were judged by members of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

The Elgin Courier competed against other newspapers in the weekly division. The Courier brought home three awards, including first place in news writing, second place in general excellence and fourth place in headline writing.

“I’m really proud of our staff at the Courier,” said Jason Hennington, area editor. “They have worked hard over the past year, and were rewarded for their efforts.”

Hennington said he hopes the Courier is able to continue this success moving forward.

“The awards are wonderful, but the intent is to deliver a great product to our readers,” he said. “We want to build on these categories along with continuing to serve our readers.”
