Elgin Independent School District has stayed active with its sports programs during the summer as the temperatures outside during June continue to rise.
WILDCATS BASEBALL
With the conclusion of the 2023 UIL Baseball season and the start of the Men’s College World Series, it’s only appropriate to show some additional love to the Elgin High School varsity baseball program.
The Wildcats recently had several outstanding baseball players honored for their 2023 season as Elgin took home several all-district accolades.
For his elite skill in the outfield, Elgin senior Justin Strong was named the District 23-5A Defensive Player of the Year. Selected as first-teamers were senior second baseman Luke Gomez, junior pitcher Nathen Lewis and junior outfielder Austin Miller.
Making the second team for District 23-5A were junior catcher Alex Gamez, sophomore outfielder Jackson Clowdus and sophomore pitcher Jack Grames. Picked as an honorable mention for the Wildcats was sophomore pitcher Fernando Ramirez.
ELGIN BASKETBALL
The Elgin basketball program stayed busy last week and now into this week as the Lady Wildcats completed their annual girls’ youth basketball camp on June 12-14 for incoming first through ninth graders.
The summer athletic camps will shift to the boys this week, who under head coach David Wilson will have their own three-day camp at 9-11 a.m. on June 19-21 at the high school gym.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Speed, agility and strength have been the focus for Elgin sports this summer as athletes from seventh through 12th graders are up bright and early for conditioning with Wildcats athletic director/ head football coach Heath Clawson and his staff at the helm. Since the beginning of June, boys and girls athletes have come out Monday through Thursday mornings to put in work to get better heading into the 2023 fall sports season.
