BASTROP – With June wrapping up, a handful of area teams were in action on Monday night for the conclusion of Bastrop boys basketball summer league held at the middle school’s two gyms. Elgin High School has competed in summer league scrimmages the past month against Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School, Smithville High School, Taylor High School and Rockdale High School.
On Monday evening, the Wildcats had seven active players suit up for their summer league scrimmages against Bastrop’s junior varsity team and Rockdale’s varsity team. Elgin won both of its games with ease, played suffocating defense and made plenty of three-pointers as the Wildcats routed the Bears and Tigers.
Cedar Creek had two gritty wins against the Taylor Ducks and rival Bastrop Bears varsity squad. Against the Ducks, the Eagles got off to a fantastic start and led 32-18 at halftime. Despite a furious rally by Taylor that had the Ducks take a 37-36 lead, it was shortlived as Cedar Creek stepped up down the stretch to go on a run and hold on to win 52-47.
The Eagles had a backand- forth affair with the Bears that came down to the wire with Cedar Creek stepping up defensively late for a hardfought 45-41 win over Bastrop.
These summer league games have been a great experience for players on the varsity and junior varsity rosters to get valuable reps in preparation of the 2023-24 regular season that is scheduled to begin in early November.
