As residents get into the swing of summer, they turn to the Elgin municipal pool and its recreational gardens for a way to cool off.

Morris Memorial Pool hosted its summer party on Friday, reminding families of everything it has to offer and what else is in store for Elgin parks. Amidst the energetic swim session with games and snacks abound, locals were able to see what’s coming to Thomas Memorial Park and vote for which playground design they like best on the community input board.

“It’s so neat, we want each park to have its own identity,” said pool coordinator Siena McBride.

Children and parents placed their sticker ballot on one of three different stylized options for play equipment – a net design featuring ropes and swings, a sliding hillside park or a futuristic geometric structured area. It was a tight race when the last sticker was stuck.

The grounds, located at 411 Madison St., will see development on more than just the playset. Elgin Parks and Recreation is looking at potentially working in a new disc golf area, pavilion, concession stand, basketball court, soccer goals and baseball field.

McBride has her eyes set on Elgin’s first skatepark next, “Everyone is going to other cities to skate,” she said. Weekly skate nights at the Recreation Center have seen increasing traffic. The working design includes a pump track, a “skating lazy river.” Budget for the skatepark is still far off.

The poolside infographics also mention changes coming to downtown Veterans Memorial Park. Listed is Wi-Fi and a new stage for the busy farmer’s market.

The summer party stayed busy until the gates closed, but free family pool swim nights will continue every Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Flotation devices and pool games are available in quantity, and lifeguards are always present.

Morris Memorial Pool also hosts lap swim and water aerobic events during the week. Visit at 802 N Ave. C or learn more at https://www. elgintexas.gov/270/Morris- Memorial-Pool.
