The yard of Randy and Melissa Swenson at 1001 Ave. F has been selected as the Elgin Garden Club’s yard of the month for July.
In honor of their son Trey Randall Swenson, 19952022, this “remembrance garden” contains a spectacular Crepe Myrtle tree with the wind chimes and bird feeder that he hung.
Planted around the year 2000, when the Swensons moved into their home, the tree shelters a continually changing array of flowers. Most are in pots, with multi-colored vinca, geraniums, white petunias, hostas, kalanchoes and dianthus. Repurposed washtubs and a handheld farm cultivator add a bit of whimsy, framed by permanent shrubs.
The Elgin Garden Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 11th St. and Highway 290. Gatherings begin at 9:30 with a meet and greet, plant exchange, refreshments and program. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
