BASTROP – A scorching hot month wrapped up with a bang last week as Bastrop hosted its annual Bears Youth Football Camp on July 25-27 at Erhard Field.
Under Bastrop head coach Jake Griedl and his coaching staff, the youth football camp had a fantastic turnout as over 135 kids signed up and showed up throughout the week.
'The future is bright! Thank you to the community for getting them out,” Griedl said. “The best is yet to come!”
Many players came out to get better with plenty of drills, conditioning, character building and scrimmaging against one another in preparation for the fall 2023 football season. There is a lot of young talent in this Bastrop Bears football program and it was fully on display last week.
This is the second football camp of the summer for Bastrop as the Bears also hosted one from May 30 until June 1 for first through fourth graders to showcase their skills on the field.
Bears varsity football will have to wait one more week until they can fully practice as a 5A school under UIL rules. Pads and helmets will be handed out on Aug. 7, the first full-contact practice is allowed on Aug. 12 and then the Bears will host Austin McCallum High School at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 for their preseason scrimmage.
Cedar Creek is also having its final camp of the summer this week from 5-7 p.m. on July 31-Aug. 3 at the Cedar Creek High School football stadium. The camp costs $50 per player and is for incoming fifth through ninth graders. Additional questions about the fourday camp can be sent via email to Eagles varsity football head coach Joshua Thomas at jthomas2@ bisdtx.org.
