BASTROP COUNTY – Elgin High School, Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School and Smithville High School will all have their varsity volleyball programs in action this week as the UIL will allow the first day for scrimmages beginning Friday.
ELGIN LADY WILDCATS
Following high school squad tryouts from July 31 through Aug. 2 with two-a-days, Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball under head coach Patricia Rivers-Taylor will be in action this weekend with two road scrimmages. Elgin will travel at 10 a.m. on Aug. 4 for a preseason match against Austin Akins High School and then head north up Highway 95 at 12 p.m. on Aug. 5 for another scrimmage against Taylor High School. There will also be a volleyball parents’ meeting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 7 at the Elgin High School main gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats, looking to bounce back from a tough 6-24 overall record (2-12 in 5A-District 23) last year, begin their 2023 regular season at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 as Elgin hosts Eastside Early College High School.
BASTROP LADY BEARS
The future seems bright for Bastrop volleyball under head coach Morgan Rollins as the Lady Bears will bring back many key players from last year’s squad. The chance for growth after a last season saw Bastrop finish with a 12-33 overall record (3-11 in district play) begins at 10 a.m. on Friday when the Lady Bears travel to Manor High School for multiple scrimmages and then return home for 8 a.m. scrimmages and the annual Bastrop Alumni Game on Saturday.
Bastrop will travel to Austin for its 2023 regular-season opener at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 for a match against the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.
CEDAR CREEK LADY EAGLES
Although the Lady Eagles finished with just a 5-28 record and a 4-10 mark in district play for the 2022 season, a vast majority of those players who received valuable varsity experience will be back this year under head coach Micah Valentine. Cedar Creek will host Marble Falls High School and Eastside for scrimmages beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday and also head to Wimberley High School at 10 a.m. the following day for additional preseason matches.
The Lady Eagles will open the 2023 regular season away at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 when Cedar Creek takes on Lockhart High School.
SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS
The Lady Tigers under head coach Regina Estrada finished 13-29 last season with a 4-8 mark in 4A-District 22 play. Smithville begins two-a- day practices early this week and will have its first scrimmage at 10 a.m. on Aug. 4 as the Lady Tigers hit the road to take on Flatonia High School and have another preseason match at 8 a.m. at home on Saturday.
The start of the regular season will be a busy one for Smithville as the Lady Tigers will have three home matches in a span of two days next week. Smithville will host Wallis High School at 4 p.m. on Aug. 8, 7 p.m. on Aug. 8 vs. Austin Lyndon B. Johnson High School and 6 p.m. on Aug. 9 vs. Elgin.
