Bastrop County has regular-season volleyball games back in action this week as the Elgin High School, Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School, Smithville High School and McDade High School varsity programs are ready to compete.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS

This was a very eventful past weekend for the Elgin volleyball program as the Lady Wildcats had multiple scrimmages at Austin Akins High School on Friday and then traveled on Saturday afternoon to nearby Taylor High School for preseason matches against the Lady Ducks, Killeen Chaparral High School and Academy High School.

The Lady Wildcats under head coach Patricia Rivers-Taylor were able to hold their own in these valuable scrimmages for their varsity and junior varsity teams over the weekend and the promise with this program will look to continue. Elgin’s varsity squad opens the 2023 regular season at home Tuesday night hosting Austin Eastside Memorial High School, will travel at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to take on Smithville and then compete Aug. 11-12 at the Texas Fest Varsity Tournament hosted by Wimberley High School in which a whopping 32 teams from across the state will be in attendance.

BASTROP LADY BEARS

Lady Bears head coach Morgan Rollins and the Bastrop varsity volleyball team have had a fantastic summer getting the girls ready for the season and that continued with scrimmages over the weekend at Manor High School. After this talented varsity squad opens its regular season Tuesday night in Austin against the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, the Lady Bears will travel way down south on Aug. 10-12 to take part in the threeday Pound Fest tournament hosted by McAllen High School.

CEDAR CREEK LADY EAGLES

The Lady Eagles under Cedar Creek head coach Micah Valentine had scrimmages over the weekend as they hosted Eastside Memorial and Marble Falls High School while also making the trip to Wimberley on Saturday for scrimmages. Cedar Creek opens its 2023 regular season on the road at Lockhart High School on Tuesday night and will travel to Austin Anderson High School on Aug. 10-12 to compete in the Jason Landers AISD Tournament.

SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS

Smithville had a scrimmage against Flatonia High School on Friday and the start of the regular season will be a busy one as the Lady Tigers will have three home matches in a span of two days this week. With head coach Regina Estrada at the helm, Smithville will host Wallis High School and Austin Lyndon B. Johnson High School for a dual on Tuesday night and Elgin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The varsity squad will also take part in the Sugar and Spike tournament Aug. 11-12 held in Killeen.

MCDADE LADY BULLDOGS

Under head coach Aaron Hallford, the 1A Lady Bulldogs are ready to get their season going this week as McDade has a couple of matches. After McDade opens their 2023 campaign at home Tuesday night vs. Snook High School, the Lady Bulldogs will travel at 5 p.m. on Aug. 11 to take on Dime Box High School.

Unfortunately due to a conflicting press time set for early Tuesday mornings at the Elgin Courier, updates for volleyball matches on Aug. 8 will not be in this week’s sports section.
