This summer’s State FFA Agricultural Education Convention brought two of Elgin High Shool’s own future farmers center stage, collecting accolades Elgin has never received before.

The Elgin FFA Talent Team of Gabi Sandoval and Leo Lazaro, led by teacher and FFA advisor Becky Maass, performed their musical setlist in front of over 15,000 students and guests from across Texas at the Dallas Convention Center this past month.

The duo advanced to the state level by winning first place at the Star FFA District and then by being the first ever Elgin representatives to claim the number one spot in the city’s area, FFA Area 12.

Finalists for the event’s 95th anniversary, Sandoval and Lazaro played Selena’s “Como La Flor” and their own rendition of Tennessee Orange, “Texas Orange.” “The Aggies all call it a sin, I’m wearing Texas orange for him,” sang Sandoval.

Both musicians took turns on the keyboard with Sandoval also playing guitar and Lazaro picking up his accordion, a crowd favorite, according to attendees.

“We are so proud of them for representing Elgin so well,” said Maass.

FFA Agricultural Education prepares the youth to pursue careers and leadership in the science, business and technology of plant and animal production, as well as natural and environmental resource systems.

Introduced to the public education system in 1917, over 800,000 students participate in its instructional programs today.
