Downtown Elgin was the site of the annual Meet The Wildcats event on Aug. 10 as many members of the community packed Veterans’ Memorial Park for the introduction of Wildcats and Lady Wildcats fall sports teams.

Plenty of food tents and booths were open at the park prior to the start of the ceremony as Elgin residents enjoyed themselves despite the continued scorching hot weather. Athletic director Jens Anderson got on the mic first to thank the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and others for putting on the event.

After the Lady Wildcats cheerleaders were introduced, boys cross country head coach Hector Garcia and girls cross head coach Jessica Stone hyped up their runners ahead of Elgin’s first upcoming meet on Aug. 18 at Lions Park in Temple.

Next, it was an enthusiastic Elgin volleyball head coach Patricia Rivers-Taylor on the mic as she proudly announced her girls for Lady Wildcats volleyball with the freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads with their 2023 seasons already underway.

Finally, Wildcats football head coach Heath Clawson had his turn to happily introduce his players and coaching staff to Elgin as these teams have a ton of potential with freshman, junior varsity and varsity all expected to compete at a high level.

Elgin football also announced on Monday that its upcoming home scrimmage vs. Canyon Lake High School was officially moved from Thursday to Friday night due to heat and construction factors. Clawson said that the freshman and junior varsity teams will begin at 7 p.m. followed by the varsity squad 15 minutes after the completion of the first scrimmages, which will be at about 8:15 to 8:30 p.m.
