The regular season is officially underway for Bastrop County area volleyball teams as Elgin High School, Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School, Smithville High School and Mc-Dade High School all had games this past week.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS

Elgin opened up the 2023 season at home on Aug. 8 under head coach Patricia Rivers-Taylor as the Lady Wildcats worked hard for a match victory in three straight sets against Austin Eastside High School. The Lady Wildcats got the job done 25-23 in the first set, 25-21 in the second and 25-16 to win the opener. Elgin junior Kay-Nicole Lester led the way for the Lady Wildcats with a match-high 12 kills and senior Makayla Taylor-Bowman had four kills of her own, while freshman Meta Elliott and junior Nadia Sagastume had four and three aces, respectively. Elgin also had a team-high in digs from senior Avinity Pleasant with six, junior Jordin Seeger with five and sophomore Sofia Ramirez with five of her own.

Although the Lady Wildcats went to the Tex Fest tournament hosted by Wimberley High School over the weekend and lost each of their matches, Elgin gained valuable experience against very good teams with matches against Wimberley, Lockhart High School, Gainesville High School, Liberty High School, Kyle Lehman High School and Victoria East High School.

Elgin will host Austin Navarro High School for a non-district match on Tuesday night before heading down the road Aug. 17-19 to compete in the Bastrop ISD Varsity Volleyball Classic Tournament.

BASTROP LADY BEARS

The Lady Bears under head coach Morgan Rollins were very busy over the past week. After a hardfought loss in four sets to open the season in Austin against the Ann Richards School For Young Women Leaders, Bastrop headed way down south for the Pound Fest tournament held in McAllen.

Bastrop was led by senior captains Alison Boswell, Fallon Hall and Olivia Altamirano over the weekend as the Lady Bears got tournament victories over Kingsville High School, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial High School and Brownsville Rivera High School. The Lady Bears will have their home opener Tuesday night vs. La Grange High School.

CEDAR CREEK LADY EAGLES

The Lady Eagles under head coach Micah Valentine opened their 2023 season on the road with a great performance on Aug. 8 as Cedar Creek beat Lockhart in straight sets 25-18, 25-20 and wrapped up the match with a 25-23 third set win.

Cedar Creek will have a non-district matchup on the road this Tuesday night against Del Valle High School.

SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS

The Lady Tigers under head coach Regina Estrada had multiple victories over the past week as Smithville handled its first two non-district home games in three straight sets against Austin LBJ High School and Elgin on Aug. 8 and 9, respectively. They then went to Florence High School for the Sugar and Spike tournament over the weekend and did very well.

Following a home match on Aug. 15 against Gonzales High School, the Lady Tigers will head east Aug 17-19 for the Tournament On The Bay hosted by Bay City High School.

MCDADE LADY BULLDOGS

Bastrop County’s smallest school under head coach Aaron Hallford made a big impression at home on Aug. 8 as the Lady Bulldogs took it to Snook High School in the season opener for both teams as McDade won in three straight sets 25-19, 25-18 and 25-22. Led by its two seniors with Steffanie Zavala and Zoraya Chamberlain, the lone freshman on the team Leah Chavez stole the show vs. Snook with a whopping seven aces.

After the Lady Bulldogs host Taylor St. Mary’s Catholic School for a non-district match at home Monday night, McDade will travel for an away dual Tuesday night against Austin Travis High School and Manor New Tech High School. McDade returns home on Friday night for a match vs. Buckholts High School.
