BASTROP – Bastrop High School was the site of the annual BISD Classic tournament on Aug. 17-19 as the Lady Bears varsity volleyball team picked up multiple victories last week. Elgin High School and Cedar Creek High School also competed in the tournament.

BASTROP LADY BEARS

The Lady Bears put in work over the weekend as they hosted the BISD Classic with many teams from Texas in attendance. Bastrop had four wins in the tournament as the Lady Bears were victorious over Elgin, Austin Eastside High School, Iowa Colony High School and Del Valle High School. Led by stellar play from senior Olivia Altamirano Newman and junior Laicey Sullivent, the Lady Bears look to continue their surge early in the season and string more match wins together as a team.

Following a road match Tuesday night at Lexington High School, Bastrop will next take part on Aug. 24-26 in the Ragin’ Rattler Tournament hosted by San Marcos High School.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS

Lady Wildcats improved to 2-0 on their home court this season as Elgin hosted Austin Navarro High School on Aug. 15 and was able to take it to the Lady Vikings in three straight sets: 25-8, 25-20 and 25-11. Elgin junior Sabra Baker led the way on the night with six kills, while freshman Meta added five kills of her own. Lady Wildcats senior Avinity Pleasant, junior Kay-Nicole Lester, junior Nadia Sagastume and sophomore Trinity Martinez each had five digs during the match.

After a Tuesday night road match at Lockhart High School, the Lady Wildcats will return home at 7 p.m. on Friday evening to host Round Rock Meridian World School.

MCDADE LADY BULLDOGS

Despite McDade High School being a small 1A school, the Lady Bulldogs varsity volleyball team showed its bite on Aug. 15 when McDade traveled to take on 4A program Manor New Tech High School. Under head coach Aaron Hallford, the Lady Bulldogs stifled the Lady Titans as they swept New Tech in three straight sets with McDade cruising 25-18, 25-18 and 25-18.

Following a victory by forfeit on Aug. 18 over Buckholts High School, the Lady Bulldogs will travel at 6 p.m. this Friday to take on IDEA Rundberg before returning home at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 to host Hearne High School.

CEDAR CREEK LADY EAGLES

After an opening-night victory on Aug. 8 in which Cedar Creek High School swept Lockhart High School in three straight sets, the Lady Eagles have struggled to string more victories together and had a handful of close match losses at the BISD Classic tournament.

With a home match Tuesday night hosting Buda Hays High School, the Lady Eagles will also travel on Aug. 24-26 to compete in the Ragin’ Rattler Tournament in San Marcos.

SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS

Smithville High School competed over the weekend at the Tournament on the Bay hosted by Bay City High School and the Lady Tigers picked up a victory over Palacios High School in which Smithville won both sets of the match 25-17.

After the Lady Tigers travel on Tuesday for a non-district matchup against Flatonia High School, Smithville will take part on Aug. 24-26 in the Rice Consolidated Tournament.
