SMITHVILLE — The Tigers opened the 2023 regular season Friday night on a very high note as the Smithville High School varsity football team shut out Austin Travis Early College High School 37-0 at Tiger Stadium on Parents Night.

Smithville controlled the game from start to finish in their opener as head coach Cyril Adkins’ squad got the job done against the visiting Rebels.

The Tigers got a great performance on offense from junior quarterback Ramonz Adams, who helped lead Smithville to five scoring drives throughout the evening. The dual-threat quarterback got the Tigers on the board with 9:26 left in the first quarter on a 36-yard scramble for a touchdown and Smithville did not look back from there. Adams finished the night 6-of-13 passing for 168 yards through the air to go along with 97 rushing yards and also had an interception in the first quarter on defense at cornerback.

De La Pena also had two receptions for 89 yards, including a catch-and-run of 53 yards on a throw over the middle from Adams.

The Smithville defense was stout all night as they didn’t allow the Rebels to get on the scoreboard. In addition to allowing zero points, the Tigers’ defense forced three turnovers with two fumble recoveries and one interception.

Now with a 1-0 record to start the season, Smithville will travel at 7:30 p.m. this Friday to take on Sealy High School. The Sealy Tigers are also coming off a dominant win in their opener after taking down Brazosport High School 42-7.
