The Cedar Creek High School and McDade High School varsity football teams both started their 2023 seasons on Friday night and unfortunately got off to a rough start.
CEDAR CREEK EAGLES
Cedar Creek opened up its 2023 campaign on Friday night at home but simply could not get the job done against a high-scoring Gonzales High School team as the Eagles were defeated 55-17 by the visiting Apaches.
The Eagles got both of their touchdowns in the third quarter as senior Chris Nino returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown and fellow senior wide receiver Roy Rose hauled in a touchdown pass from Cedar Creek junior quarterback Dillon Dubee. Eagles sophomore David Chavez kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter, while senior defensive back K’Veahon Houston had an interception in the game that he returned for 18 yards.
Head coach Joshua Thomas and his squad look to bounce back this week as Cedar Creek will again be home at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday as the Eagles host San Antonio Southside High School.
MCDADE BULLDOGS
Six-man action was underway as the Bulldogs went up against a good Menard High School team last Friday and were defeated on the road 62-14 by a program that is just two years removed from making the transition from 11-man football.
Although the Bulldogs were able to get on the board in the first quarter to take a quick 8-0 lead, McDade was unable to keep up on defense with a high-powered Yellowjackets’ offense throughout the rest of the night.
McDade first-year head coach Nick Parker will have his squad ready to play at 7:30 p.m. this Friday as the Bulldogs host Cedar Park Summit Christian Academy in the first of three straight home games.
