SAN MARCOS – The Bastrop High School varsity volleyball team under head coach Morgan Rollins is starting to click this 2023 season as the Lady Bears are fresh off a trip to San Marcos over the weekend at the Ragin’ Rattler Tournament. Elgin High School, Smithville High School and McDade High School also had notable volleyball matches.

Rollins spoke highly of her seniors, especially the captains Fallon Hall, Alison Boswell and Olivia Altamirano for the work they’ve put in with this Bastrop program as the Lady Bears went 4-2 over two days and were the silver bracket consolation champions.

“These captains/seniors are very special and are on a mission to end their high school careers on a successful note,” Rollins said. “They were all sophomores when we made program history in 2021 and they are motivated to do it again!”

With a 12-13 overall record at the end of August, the Lady Bears look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021 when they secured a bi-district championship victory when Bastrop upset Austin Anderson High School.

Bastrop will have a home match Tuesday night vs. Lockhart High School and then travel at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night for the non-district finale against Cedar Park High School. The Lady Bears will open District 23-5A play at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 hosting Pflugerville High School.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS

Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball was also in action this past week as the Lady Wildcats traveled for a match on Aug. 22 at Lockhart and then returned home Friday night to host Round Rock Meridian World School.

Elgin lost in three straight sets to the Lady Lions as Lockhart was victorious 25-15, 25-13 and 25-13. Lady Wildcats junior Kay-Nicole Lester led the way with a team-high eight kills and eight digs on the night, while sophomore Trinity Martinez and junior Nadia Sagastume had seven and four digs, respectively.

The Lady Wildcats played a tough match at home Aug. 25 when they hosted Meridian World but lost in three straight sets: 16-25, a back-and-forth 26-28 second set and were defeated 15-25 in the third set.

After Elgin travels to take on Austin Hyde Park High School on Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats will host Taylor St. Mary’s Catholic School at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night.

SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS

The Smithville varsity volleyball squad had a successful weekend at the Rice Consolidated Tournament as the Lady Tigers were the champions in the bronze consolation bracket.

Following a road match at Kyle Lehman High School Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers will return home at 6 p.m. on Friday to host Luling High School for another non-district contest.

MCDADE LADY BULLDOGS

McDade again won in dominant fashion on Friday Night as the Lady Bulldogs went on the road and won convincingly 25-8, 25-7 and 25-9 in three straight sets at Austin IDEA Rundberg College Preparatory.

The Lady Bulldogs will follow their Tuesday home match vs. Hearne High School with a road contest at 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Matagorda High School.
