Silver-haired legislature swears in local

Bastrop resident Peggy Dimmick was sworn in for her second term as a member of the Texas Silver- Haired Legislature by Texas House Representative Gary VanDeaver earlier this month.

Bastrop resident Peggy Dimmick was sworn in for her second term as a member of the Texas Silver- Haired Legislature by Texas House Representative Gary VanDeaver earlier this month.

The TSHL orientation session was the first of three leading up to their legislative session in Spring, 2024.

Delegates will research issues of concern for older Texans, prepare resolutions for proposed legislation, pass them through committee and vote on them in full chamber.

Approved resolutions will be included in a TSHL legislative report, delivered to all legislators, as well as Governor Abbott, in advance of the 2025 state session.

“We sincerely thank our elected officials for the significant number of bills passed to address the needs of older Texans,” said Sherry Hubbard, elected TSHL Speaker for the 20th Session. “We also remind them we’ll be back to address unfinished business.”

The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature has been an active non-partisan body since 1985, and has produced over 275 pieces of legislation related to concerns for the ever-growing population of older Texans, according to Hubbard.

Dimmick has developed multiple senior citizen programs and been involved with several nonprofit organizations. Her Senior Citizen Activity Center was voted “best in the greater Houston area” for 2018 and 2019, according to the TSHL.

Additional information on the legislature and what they do is available at www.tshl.org.
