Highway collision fatal for driver

Bastrop County resident, Eric Hernandez, 23, was left dead after a head-on collision with an 18-wheel tractor-trailer.

According to witnesses, Hernandez’s pickup truck was heading eastbound on the 600 block of State Highway 290 when it crossed over the center lane and into the path of the much larger semi, around 2 p.m. on Aug. 26.

The driver was immediately transported to an Austin area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the tractor- trailer refused medical attention and is cooperating with investigators.

The official cause of the crash is still under investigation.

This is Elgin’s second traffic fatality in 2023, with both incidents occurring on State Highway 290.
