Bastrop Pride present at art walk

BASTROP — The first Friday of every month continues to breathe life into historic downtown Bastrop with the city’s “art walk,” an exhibition of local talent and a platform for communal organizations.

This month’s rendition saw members of Bastrop Pride set up stand on Main Street, sharing information surrounding the growing LGBTQ+ community in Bastrop County.

Bastrop Pride is a nonprofit organization set on serving the county and celebrating its diversity, servicing the pride community by helping with some of the more difficult conversations, according to group chairman Brett Douglas.

“It’s going to take time for people to realize that we bring business,” said Douglas, aiming to support both his community and its city.

Established three years ago, Bastrop Pride plans on spreading its reach with more of a presence in the surrounding area.

“This is the year of Elgin for us,” added Douglas. “We’re looking forward to Hogeye, we really want to get an Elgin representative on the board.”

Elgin’s Hogeye Festival is scheduled for Oct. 26-28, bringing together county residents in a celebration of the city’s culture and all things swine.

Douglas spoke with neighbors while talented local musicians came together for impromptu jam sessions beside him, setting the mood for the entire three blocks of the art walk, according to attendees.

Juan Rangel, organizer of the Visitor Center’s “Music in the Museum” series, played saxophone alongside a team of guitarists, drummers and harmonica players.

Vendors for the monthly affair included sculptors, artists, craftsmen and tailors, selling everything from handmade soap to oak scorpions.

Foot traffic continues to flow down the street each month, still growing more than a year after the event’s inception.

Those looking to get involved with Bastrop Pride can also attend their meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sep. 20 at the Calvary Episcopal Church, 1028 Main St.
