Elgin Cares cookout returns

Basketball, bingo and BBQ

Basketball, bingo and BBQ

Elgin Cares is extending an invitation to the city it serves for their sixth annual community cookout.

The organization strives to bring together individuals and local businesses to help families build strength, stability and the independence they need for a better life.

This year’s free festival theme is “reunion,” and the group has put in extra effort to create a memorable and entertaining experience for everyone who attends, according to organizers.

“Be sure to bring your kids, stroller, outdoor armchair, swimwear, dogs, pet hamsters, grandmothers and even the guy who took 15 plates from the family reunion, as everyone is welcome to join in on the festivities,” said Elgin Cares Executive Director Steven Ward.

The event will feature games and sports for all ages, with water activities and cooling fans provided by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative to help keep everyone comfortable and cool.

For sports enthusiasts, Elgin Cares has organized a co-ed basketball competition with both teen and adult divisions.

Bingo play will continue throughout the day as well, while DJ ReeseBoi provides music for the whole affair.

Vendors have signed up to showcase their unique offerings, and a BBQ meal will be provided free of charge.

If interested in setting up as a vendor, participating in the co-ed basketball challenge or looking for more information, visit https://www.etxcares.org.

Elgin Care’s neighborly gathering is scheduled for Sept. 23, from 10 to 4 p.m., at Elgin Memorial Park.
