SMITHVILLE – The Smithville High School varsity football team was defeated 33-13 at home by Geronimo Navarro High School last Friday as the Tigers hosted their Homecoming game.
Navarro was able to get out to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter and tacked on another score in the second quarter as the Panthers led the Tigers 13-0 at halftime.
Facing a 20-0 deficit midway through the third quarter, Smithville finally got on the board as Tigers sophomore quarterback Trip Davis connected with junior wide receiver Ramonz Adams on a 35-yard touchdown pass to cut the Navarro lead to just 20-7.
The Tigers continued to hang around even after Navarro went back up 27-7 in the fourth quarter. Davis would find Adams again for a 23-yard touchdown pass as Smithville was within two scores again down just 27-13.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, that was as close as they would get the rest of the way as the Panthers added one more touchdown to increase the lead to 33-13.
Smithville will have another tough task ahead of it at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night in a non-district road game at Taylor High School. The Tigers lost a 40-35 heartbreaker at home to the Ducks last season.
