Area cross country teams compete in Pflugerville

PFLUGERVILLE – Multiple teams from Bastrop County were in action this past Friday as Smithville High School, Bastrop High School and Elgin High School varsity cross country each competed in the Pflugerville ISD Cross Country Invitational held at Northeast Metropolitan Park.

PFLUGERVILLE – Multiple teams from Bastrop County were in action this past Friday as Smithville High School, Bastrop High School and Elgin High School varsity cross country each competed in the Pflugerville ISD Cross Country Invitational held at Northeast Metropolitan Park.

SMITHVILLE TIGERS AND LADY TIGERS The Tigers and Lady Tigers had a great showing in Pflugerville as the Smithville girls placed second overall out of 11 schools in 1A-4A with the boys placing fourth as a team.

In the girls’ two-mile run, the Lady Tigers had three runners place in the top 15 out of 63 runners: Addison Waneck in 10th with a time of 13:39.50, Emorie Jones right behind her in 11th with a mark of 13:40.00 and Cassie Barina in 14th with a time of 13:57.80.

As for the boys in the 5000-meter run, Will Metcalf placed ninth with a mark of 19:04.70 and Elijah Romero placed 21st with a time of 20:10.30.

Smithville varsity cross country will next compete this Thursday in a meet hosted by Salado High School at Tenroc Ranch.

BASTROP BEARS AND LADY BEARS Bastrop competed in the 5A-6A division of the Pflugerville Invitational on Friday with the Bears placing eighth as a team out of 25 schools and the Lady Bears in 11th place.

For the boys in the 5000meter run, Isaac Reutter led the way for the Bears in 35th place out of a large field of 169 runners with a time of 18:36.60. Bastrop also had two more runners crack the top 50 as Rey Ponce placed 45th with a mark of 18:53.70 and Johan Torres placing 50th with a time of 18:58.00.

The girls competed in the two-mile run as Sherlyn Arias placed 51st with a mark of 23:53.70 and Maritza Vargas in 61st place with a time of 24:23.70.

Just like Smithville, the Bastrop Bears and Lady Bears varsity cross country teams will also travel on Sept. 14 to compete in Salado at Tenroc Ranch.

ELGIN WILDCATS AND LADY WILDCATS Elgin had a few runners who did quite well on Friday in Pflugerville as the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats continued their 2023 cross country season.

In the girls’ two-mile run for 5A-6A, Courtney Shepard had an impressive performance representing the Lady Wildcats as her mark of 22:51.80 placed her 39th in a big field of 140 runners. Lucia Luna placed 78th with a time of 25:04.70 with her teammate Katelyn Olivares in 98th place with a mark of 25:46.90.

As for the boys, Matthew Cato was the highest finisher for Elgin in the 5000-meter run as he placed 77th with a time of 19:40.20. The Wildcats also had two more runners in the top 100 as Justin Pena finished in 95th place with a mark of 20:17.5 with teammate Rolando Jimenez right behind him in 97th place with a time of 20:23.50.

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will travel this weekend on Saturday, Sept. 16 as Elgin will compete in the Lago Vista Invitational.
