TAYLOR – The Smithville High School varsity football team got off to a great start on Sept. 15 on the road against Taylor High School but the Tigers could not keep up with the Ducks’ stout running game in a 49-19 loss.

Following a long pass from Smithville sophomore quarterback Trip Davis to junior wide receiver Ramonz Adams to get into a first-and-goal situation, the Tigers got on the board first thanks to some trickery. On thirdand- goal, sophomore running back Justin Gurley took the toss from Davis and threw a wide-open touchdown to Adams to give Smithville a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After Taylor answered with a touchdown run, the Tigers’ big-play ability struck again as Davis connected with Adams down the Taylor sideline for a deep 73-yard touchdown pass to put Smithville back in front 13-6.

Tied 13-13 heading into the second quarter, the Ducks surged offensively and scored four touchdowns as the Tigers’ defense struggled to get any stops. With Taylor’s offensive awakening in the second quarter, Smithville was down big 42-13 at halftime as the Ducks would eventually go on to rush for a whopping 309 yards as a team this game.

The Taylor defense was able to keep the Tigers’ offense corralled for most of the second half but Smithville got one last score late in the fourth quarter as Davis threw a 30-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Gurley to get within 49-19.

The Tigers will have one more non-district contest at 7:30 p.m. this Friday as Smithville will travel to take on Lago Vista High School.
