BASTROP — The Bastrop Independent School District Performing Arts Center will be hosting a landmark conference commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Delgado v. Bastrop ISD ruling, celebrating the legacy of educational equality progress that has been made since.

The Sept. 30 gathering will also educate attendees about ongoing challenges facing the public, and is set to inspire action towards a more equitable future.

“Educational Equality for Latinos in Texas” commemorates the landmark 1948 lawsuit brought up by Mexican American parents fighting for Central Texas school districts.

A pivotal moment in the struggle for nationwide equity, the ruling set a precedent for the 1954 Supreme Court decision declaring all segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

The conference will bring together a diverse community of advocates, educators, students and civil rights leaders to share their perspectives on the ruling’s impact over the past 75 years and explore current injustices that exist in educational systems today.

Organizers hope to leave attendees with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment towards desegregation in Central Texas schools.

Program highlights include presentations from Minerva Delgado, Senator Gonzalo Barrientos and historian Gene Pruess, alongside intergenerational panel discussions. The event will highlight voices of members in the Latino community who have firsthand experience with the challenges and triumphs of segregated schools.

Everyone is welcome for this free event, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bastrop ISD Performing Arts Center, 1401 Cedar St.
