Staring down a 21-0 deficit after the first quarter on Homecoming, the Elgin High School varsity football team rose to the occasion last Friday as the Wildcats stormed back for an empathic 50-28 victory over Pflugerville Connally High School.

However, this team showed a ton of resiliency on both offense and defense to quickly get back into this game as the Wildcats rallied for 21 straight points in the second quarter, heading into the locker room at halftime with Elgin and Connally deadlocked at 21-21 following a 12-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Nathen Lewis.

In the third quarter, Elgin took its first lead of the night when Lewis threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Curtis McFarlin out of the backfield to put the Wildcats up 28-21.

The Wildcats extended their lead in the fourth quarter when Lewis connected deep downfield with senior wide receiver Blake Courtney on a 49yard touchdown pass as Elgin went up by two scores and did not look back the rest of the way.

Lewis again put on a show as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the area, completing 11-of-19 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns through the air to go along with 17 carries for 157 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

For the second straight week, Elgin scored at least 50 points and the defense certainly came to play for the final stretch on Friday against Connally as the team allowed just seven points over the last three quarters to seal a great win on Homecoming. Elgin senior Derrius Holiday was all over the field for the Wildcats with a team-high nine tackles and two sacks, while senior defensive end Rogelio Huitron and sophomore linebacker Matthew Clear each added eight tackles of their own.

Elgin (3-2 overall with a 1-0 record in District 5A-2 District 13 play) will travel at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 to take on Belton High School. The Tigers are undefeated at 5-0 and opened district last week with a 35-19 victory at Pflugerville High School last week.
