MCDADE – One of the top teams in the state at the 1A classification, the McDade High School varsity volleyball team picked up two wins this past week at home vs. Dime Box High School and on the road at Prairie Lea High School in the District 28-1A opener.

Ranked No. 10 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll for 1A schools, McDade avenged its only loss from earlier this season as the Lady Bulldogs beat Dime Box on Sept. 19 in four sets: 25-9, 23-25, 25-19 and 29-27 in a marathon fourth set to get the match victory.

Under head coach Aaron Hallford, the Lady Bulldogs were led on the night against Dime Box by McDade junior Lauren Glosson with a matchhigh 10 kills and five aces. Lady Bulldogs freshman Leah Chavez had a whopping 12 aces and five kills, while senior Steffanie Zavala added four kills and four aces of her own.

The Lady Bulldogs also traveled on Sept. 22 for their first district game and handled business at Prairie Lea and won in straight set fashion: 25-19 in the first set, a gritty 26-24 win in the second set and 25-16 to wrap it up in the third set. Zavala led the way with eight kills and five aces, while Chavez again was very effective serving with nine aces as well as five kills.

Since the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Longhorns back on Aug. 11 in Dime Box, McDade has now won 11 straight matches. Following a district home match Tuesday night vs. Waelder High School, the Lady Bulldogs (12-1 overall record) will be off until 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 3 when McDade remains at home to host Fayetteville High School.
