Smithville cross country superb at Lake Belton

TEMPLE – The Smithville High School varsity cross country program had itself a meet to remember on Thursday, Sept. 21 as the Lady Tigers and Tigers each competed at the Lake Belton Bronco Invitational held at Crossroads Park in Temple.

TEMPLE – The Smithville High School varsity cross country program had itself a meet to remember on Thursday, Sept. 21 as the Lady Tigers and Tigers each competed at the Lake Belton Bronco Invitational held at Crossroads Park in Temple.

Against tough competition, the Lady Tigers placed first as a team with 55 points amongst 12 schools in 1A-4A who entered at least five runners in the girls’ two-mile run. In a field of 91 runners, Smithville junior Addison Waneck was stellar that morning as she placed third with a time of 14:04.50 while freshman teammate Brityn Roberts also cracked the top 10 in seventh place with a mark of 14:10.70.

Also making the top 20 for Smithville in an impressive showing was freshman Cassie Barina in 12th place with a time of 14:27.90, freshman Melany Villalobos in 16th with a mark of 15:00.50, sophomore Brooke Wilhelm placed 17th with a time of 15:00.60 and freshman Elaynah Romero in 20th place with a mark of 15:05.40.

As for the boys in the 5000-meter run amongst 1A-4A schools in a field of 78 entries, all five Tigers placed at least in the top 50. Smithville freshman Will Metcalf had a great run as his time of 18:56.10 was good for sixth place, junior Cameron Morris in 27th place with a mark of 20:48.50, senior Sam Miner in 32nd place with a time of 21:06.60, freshman Aidan Cox placed 37th with a mark of 21:30.80 and sophomore Zechariah Schroeder came in 48th place for the Tigers with a time of 23:13.70.

Smithville cross country will next compete on Friday, Sept. 29 in the Camp Tejas Invitational meet hosted by Giddings High School.
