BASTROP – The grind to the postseason continued this past week for the Bastrop High School varsity volleyball team as the Lady Bears hosted Pflugerville Connally High School on Sept. 19 and traveled to Elgin High School on Sept. 22 for a pair of District 23-5A matches.
Despite the Lady Bears dropping the first set to the Connally Lady Cougars 16-25, Bastrop went on a roll and fought hard to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22 to seal the deal. The Lady Bears continue to get outstanding play for the duo of senior Olivia Altamirano and junior Laicey Sullivent, while sophomore Abby Thomas was honored by her teammates after the match to celebrate her 500th career dig over just a two-year span.
On Friday night on the road against a scrappy Elgin Lady Wildcats squad, the Lady Bears had to scratch and claw to a victory but were able to handle business in a three-set sweep as Bastrop won 25-19 in the first set, held on to win the second set 25-22 and cruised in the final set 25-14 to win another district match. Another milestone was reached for the Lady Bears on Friday evening in Elgin as senior Fallon Hall continued her stellar varsity career by notching assist No. 1,000 against the Lady Wildcats.
Now with a 3-2 record in district play, this squad under head coach Morgan Rollins is in prime position to return to the playoffs after missing out in 2022. The Lady Bears look to keep it rolling at home on Tuesday night vs. rival Cedar Creek High School before hitting the road at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 to take on a great Georgetown High School team.
