Eagles FB stumped by Lockhart second-half surge

BASTROP – The Cedar Creek High School varsity football team fought hard on Friday, Sept. 22 in the Eagles’ 5A-2 District 13 opener vs. Lockhart High School at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium. Unfortunately, a second-half rally by the visiting Lions was too much to overcome as the Eagles fell 42-20.

Cedar Creek jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when junior quarterback Dillon Dubee scored from one yard out on a sneak up the middle. After the Lions responded with 21 straight points, the Eagles got right back into it in the second quarter.

A leaping interception on defense from Eagles sophomore cornerback Dylan Redmon gave the ball back to the Cedar Creek offense and changed the momentum back. Sophomore quarterback Blaze Orr came into the game and made a great throw over the middle to Cedar Creek senior tight end Mason Thomas, who made a juggling catch and broke multiple Lockhart tackles to score a 30-yard touchdown reception. Just like that, the Eagles were back in this game and then forced Lockhart to turn the ball over on downs and headed into halftime down just 21-14 in a crucial district opener for both teams.

However, the Lions came out on fire in the second half and scored another 21 unanswered points and the Eagles were unable to recover this time.

Cedar Creek still got on the board once more as Dubee found Thomas wide open in the endzone for a two-yard touchdown pass to get the Eagles within 42-20 in the fourth quarter, a score that would hold the rest of the way.

The Eagles, who are now 0-5 and have a 0-1 record in district play, will have their work cut out for them at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 as Cedar Creek travels to take on Liberty Hill High School. The Panthers, who have a heavy rushing attack with the Slot-T offense, are coming off a 34-28 loss at the hands of Kerrville Tivy High School this past Friday.
