SMITHVILLE – The Texas Department of Transportation will hold a virtual public hearing Oct. 20, taking comments from interested parties concerning approval of financial assistance.

Under the Federal Aviation Administration Capital Improvement Program, Smithville is one of 22 potential locations able to receive a grant for critical airport development.

Smithville’s estimated share of funding reaches over $1.5 million, to go towards the design and construction of electrical improvements.

The Smithville Crawford Municipal Airport has been recognized by the FAA as a significant airport for national air transportation. In the past, allocation of project funds has been given to airports with the highest national priority.

With funding, the FAA hopes to ensure that the air transport of people, services and goods is provided in a safe and secure environment.

By preserving and upgrading existing airport systems, the FAA helps increase capacity, improve compatibility with surrounding communities and provide sufficient access through airports, according to the administration.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. and can be accessed at https:// www.txdot.gov/projects/ hearings-meetings/aviation/ 102023.html.

Organizations, associations and individuals are encouraged to present their common interests and views.
