Area trio competes at 5A-District 23 meet

GEORGETOWN – Elgin High School, Cedar Creek High School and Bastrop High School varsity cross country were all in action Oct. 12 for the 5A-District 23 meet hosted by Georgetown East View High School.

ELGIN WILDCATS AND LADY WILDCATS

Although the Georgetown girls dominated the 5,000-meter run with the top five finishers, Elgin showed promise as Lady Wildcats senior Courtney Shepard put together a solid performance. Shepard placed 12th in a field of 43 runners with a time of 20:30.40, while Elgin junior Lucia Luna cracked the top 30 with a finish of 28th place and a mark of 24:59.40.

As for the Wildcats in the boys 5,000-meter run, sophomore Matthew Cato was the Elgin top finisher in 24th place with a time of 18:14.70 with fellow sophomore teammate Xavier Seday in 38th place with a mark of 19:31.40.

CEDAR CREEK EAGLES AND LADY EAGLES

The Cedar Creek boys showed out in Georgetown last Thursday as Eagles senior Alejandro Ruiz continued his outstanding 2023 campaign with a fifth-place finish in a field of 47 runners in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:14.40. Fellow Cedar Creek senior Matthew Sobeck placed 19th with a mark of 17:46.10, while Eagles junior Eduardo Torres-Alamilla came in 23rd place with a time of 18:12.00.

As for the Lady Eagles, they had three runners place in the top 20 in the district meet: senior Paisley Smith in 24th with a mark of 22:39.20, senior Venus Gonzales-Vega in 26th with a time of 23:13.30 and freshman Yulisa Garcia in 29th with a mark of 23:55.90.

BASTROP BEARS AND LADY BEARS

For the Bears in the boys 5,000-meter run, junior Rey Ponce led the way for Bastrop in 14th place with a time of 17:17.20 and senior Isaac Reutter also racked the top 20 with a finish of 18th place and a mark of 17:40.60. Bastrop freshman Johan Torres placed 25th with a time of 18:22.70, while fellow freshman Diego Rangel came in 27th place with a mark of 18:33.40.

Bastrop sophomore Lleradin Ponce came in 23rd place in the girls’ run with a time of 22:25.70, while Lady Bears freshman Sherlyn Arias placed 27th with a mark of 23:21.70.

The upcoming 5A Region 3 championship meet is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23 at Kate Barr Ross Park on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. The girls will run at 8:15 a.m. with the boys at 9 a.m. afterward with both competing in the 5,000-meter run.
