GIDDINGS – The Smithville High School varsity cross country program took to the course at Camp Tejas in Giddings last Thursday as the Lady Tigers and Tigers both competed in the 4A-District 22 championship meet.
The Lady Tigers placed second as a team with 40 points at district to qualify for the upcoming regional meet as five Smithville runners placed in the top 15 in the girls’ two-mile run. Smithville junior Addison Waneck came in second place with a time of 12:56.13, freshman Emorie Jones was right behind in third place with a mark of 13:00.82, freshman Brityn Roberts placed 11th with a time of 13:36.21, sophomore Brooke Wilhelm came in 12th with a mark of 13:49.47 and freshman Melany Villalobos placed 15th with a time of 13:59.87.
As for the Tigers, the boys in the 5,000-meter run qualified for the regional meet in third place with 83 points as a team. Smithville freshman Will Metcalf cracked the top 10 with an eighthplace finish and mark of 17:48.90, junior Elijah Romero in 11th place with a time of 17:59.07, junior Cameron Morris in 17th place with a time of 19:15.46, junior Kaleb Corona in 19th with a mark of 19:20.51 and freshman Aiden Cox in 28th place with a time of 20:13.36.
Smithville has a little time off as the Tigers and Lady Tigers will get ready for the 4A Region 3 championship Oct. 24 at Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. The girls will run the two-run event at 11:45 a.m. with the boys competing at 12:15 p.m. in the 5,000meter run.
