SMITHVILLE – Local chicken enthusiast John Finch, and his “Come and Wing It” team, took home the people of Smithville’s vote for Wingfest’s best chicken wing, the second year in a row.

The annual poultry celebration, hosted in downtown Smithville this past weekend, brought together residents for a good, old-fashioned neighborly cook-off, according to attendees.

The competition saw seven local chefs put forward their hottest, sweetest and tangiest original recipes, dressing their wings in homemade sauces for the town to enjoy. Heat levels and styles of wings varied greatly between contestants.

“It’s a throwback to a time gone by, community oriented, we love it,” said Smithville resident of two years Dan Williams, speaking on the town as a whole, as well as the Wingfest.

Beside the historic railways of Smithville, community members enjoyed cold drinks and hot wings in support of the event’s organizer, the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber helped keep their visitors entertained with their “hottest chick in town” poultry pageant and a round of chicken bingo.

Three of the town’s prettiest birds were on display, sporting unique feather patterns, combs and tufts.

Meanwhile on a numbered board inside a cage, the droppings left behind by Bo the chicken decided who the bingo winner was. Twenty percent of the $5 entry fees went to the chamber, while the victor took home the rest.

Residents expressed that this is what Smithville is all about, coming together as a community and sharing an afternoon out together in their picturesque home.
